FC Barcelona Nou Camp, Barcelona photos

The FC Barcelona Nou Camp is one of the biggest and most majestic football stadiums in the world. It is the home ground of the famous Barcelona Football Club (commonly known as Barça) and it is located in Les Corts district very near Diagonal, one of the main avenues of Barcelona.

Nou Camp is classified as a 5-star stadium by UEFA (Union of European Football Associations), an honour that only few European stadiums in the world actually have. After being remodelled in 1998 the stadium has a capacity of 99,000 spectators and the dimension of the football field is 105 x 68 metres.

Before Nou Camp was built, Barca was playing in a stadium that after several extensions it was able to hold just 60,000 spectators and it was practically impossible to make it bigger. It was not until Francesc Miró-Sans was elected president of Football Club Barcelona (14th November, 1953) that the construction started and on March 28, in front of many excited fans, he laid the first stone of Nou Camp.

The stadium was inaugurated the 24th of September 1957, the day of La Mercè, the patron of Barcelona. There was great expectation, specially because of the star Kubala (also known as ‘Laszy’), a Hungarian football player and coach that became one of the most famous legends of Barcelona Football Club. The first goal ever celebrated in Nou Camp was scored by the Barcelones player Eulogio Martinez during a friendly match between Barcelona and Warsaw.

The Barca head office is located in Nou Camp, as well as the Football Club Barcelona Museum (Museo del FC Barcelona) that covers 3,500 m2 and receives 1,160,000 visitors every year (the most visited museum in Cataluña!). In the installations you can find not only the history of the club, but also an art gallery with works of many prestigious artists, one of the best private collection of memorabilia (Futbolart – Pablo Ornaque) and temporary exhibitions.

Nou Camp has always been the scene of many sports, cultural and even social events. Some of them are:

- Opening football match between Argentina and Belgium during the world Cup - 1982
- Final football match between Spain and Poland during the Olympic Games - 1992
- Final match of the European Football Cup – Champions Ligue (‘Liga de campeones’) in 1989, when the Milan of Frank Rijkaard (the current manager of Barca), Ruud Gullit and Marco van Basten beated the Bucarest Steaua (Steaua Bucuresti). And in 1999 when Manchester United beat Bayern Munich (FC Bayern Manchen)
- A mass celebrated by the Pope John Paul II - 1982
- Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Julio Iglesias, U2 concerts (among many others)
- Amnesty International macro-concert for Human Rights with famous singers as Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Tracy Chapman - 1988
- Even the 3 tenors: Josep Carreras, Placido Domingo and Luciano Pavarotti held a concert in Nou Camp - 1997

Nowadays every football match played by FC Barcelona in Nou Camp is a real celebration that gathers fans and tourists eager to see the stadium, enjoy the game and admire the world's most famous football players, some considered true footballing greats: Ronaldinho Gaucho "Ronaldinho", young Argentinian superstar, Lionel Messi, Samuel Eto'o, Anderson Luis de Souza "Deco", Carles Puyol, Victor Valdes, Xavier Hernandez "Xavi", Juliano Belletti, Rafa Marquez,  Thiago Motta, Ludovic Giuly, Oleguer Presas, Andres Iniesta and more...
